Obama Ticket Is Younger Generation

February 9, 2008

The Facts

According to practically ever news source over the past three months, the younger generation is the driving force behind Barrack Obama’s success. Of course he’s getting a noticeable amount of the older generation vote, but the younger generation seems to be what’s putting him over the top. Even Obama insiders are acknowledging this fact, and, in that sense, the media is comparing him to President John F. Kennedy.

My View

Over the past 25 years I have been witness to two separate state elections with a similar atmosphere that surrounds Barrack Obama; a younger candidate that excited the younger generation. In the first case, the candidate won the election and in the second case the candidate lost the election. However, in both cases, the resulting affects on the young voters were the same. The candidate that won his election began disappointing his voters soon after taking office. He started abandoning his campaign promises and fell right into the world of politics. It wasn’t long before the people I personally knew begin to voice their disappointment and, within time, swore off politics and said they’d never vote again. In the case of the candidate that lost his election, the voters I knew were so disappointed that their strong beliefs in their candidate and efforts to get him elected were to no avail that they, too, swore off politics forever. In just about every single case, they were first time voters.

After finishing our formal education, one of our foremost thoughts is that we are going to go out into the world and make a difference. Not a bad attitude to have. However, sooner or later we come to the realization that, in politics, we really have no control over making a difference. So we abandon politics for the time being and go on with just trying to carve out a life for ourselves and our family. Only when we are older do we re-enter the world of politics, because it is then that we understand how the game is played.
